The short answer

Short answer

There are four options for after-hours calls. Voicemail costs little, but some callers hang up and call someone else. Forwarding to your cell works until you are asleep, driving or on a job. A live answering service puts a person on the line, usually billed per minute or per call. An AI receptionist answers every call, books on your calendar and sends urgent calls to the on-call person. It is a flat $497 a month.

02 / How to choose

Three questions pick the option.

  • 01

How many calls come after hours?

Check your missed calls for a week. A few a month needs less cover than a call every night.

  • 02

    How urgent are they?

Some calls cannot wait until morning. Decide which ones need a person right away.

  • 03

    Booked, or just noted?

Booking saves you a step. A note means you call back and book it yourself.

03 / Set up

Set up these three things, whatever you pick.

  1. An urgent-call rule

Write down who gets woken up, and for what kind of call. Keep the list short.

  2. A greeting with a callback time

Say when you will call back, such as by 10 AM. Only promise a time you can keep.

  3. A morning log of every call

Read every after-hours call the next morning. Each one should end booked, noted or sent to on-call.

5 questions
01

Is voicemail enough after hours?

It works for some callers. Others hang up and call someone else. Voicemail cannot book a time or send an urgent call to a person.

02

Does an AI receptionist answer when I am asleep?

Yes. It answers 24/7, usually in two rings. The caller hears your business name and a recording notice first.

03

Do I have to change my phone number?

No. You keep your number. Calls forward to the AI, so no porting is needed.

04

What does an AI receptionist cost?

It is $497 a month, with one line and up to 500 AI talk-minutes. The one-time build fee is $997. It is waived on a 6-month agreement. See pricing.

05

How is it different from a live answering service?

A live service puts a person on the line, usually billed per minute or per call. The AI receptionist books on your calendar and sends a summary after every call. Compare them in AI receptionist vs answering service.
